Digital Learning through Student Council Elections

As the use of digital learning advances, students at Ramirez Thomas Elementary in Santa Fe used educational technology to progress their learning outside normal classroom learning. The recent student council election was an opportunity to use digital learning in an innovative approach. Students running for Student Council wrote brief bios about their qualifications and using Google Forms, candidate names and background were placed on the school ballot. A Google website was created containing this information, accompanied by a video biography of them, recorded on iPads. Later, a “Meet the Candidate” event was held allowing select grades to see the candidates present their platform position using Google Hangout and broadcast on Smart Boards in the classrooms. When voting took place on election day, students accessed iPads to vote for candidates of their choice. The election was unlike the typical paper and pencil ballots of yesteryear providing an opportunity for both students and educators alike on how to enhance learning from the use of digital technology.
